IT WAS 33 YEARS AGO AND A HALF WORLD AWAY

THAT WE WERE TOGETHER IN A MUCH DIFFERENT WAY

WE HAD SEEN THE HORROR AND UGLINESS OF WAR

UP CLOSE AND IN PERSON ON ITS OWN FRONT DOOR

MOST OF US HAD COME OUT OF THE BUSH

AND FELT A LITTLE BIT SAFER UNDER THE TRUST

OF OUR DOCTORS AND CHIEFS BACK IN THE REAR

WHERE YOU WOULD THINK THERE WAS NOTHING TO FEAR

SUCH WAS NOT THE CASE AS WE SOON FOUND OUT

WITH INCOMING MORTARS AND ROCKETS ABOUT

WE DID OUR JOBS SUCH AS SICK CALLS AND MEDCAPS

NEVER THINKING IF ANYONE  EVER REALLY GAVE A CRAP

WHEN OUR DAILY TASKS WERE FULLY COMPLETED

WE'D  THOUGHT OUR ENERGY WAS ALSO DEPLETED

THIS WAS NOT THE CASE BECAUSE WE USUALLY HAD FUN

BY GETTING TOGETHER IN THE AFTERNOON SUN

FOR WE  USUALLY WENT  TO PLAY HORSESHOES OR VOLLEYBALL

IT WAS THERE THAT WE COULD SHOW ONE AND ALL

THAT CORPSMEN WERE FRIENDS AND BROTHERS

WHO COULD ALWAYS COUNT ON EACH OTHER

TO BE THERE LIKE WE WERE FOR OUR FELLOW MARINES

UNDER ANY CONDITIONS NO MATTER HOW EXTREME

AND YES THIRTY THREE YEARS HAVE PASSED

BUT OUR BOND FOREVER LASTS

AS IT WILL FOR ANOTHER THIRTY THREE

FOR AS LONG AS OUR COUNTRY REMAINS FREE
